Title: Haunted Finger Lakes: A Ghost Hunter’s Guide

Author: Dwayne Claud

Pages: 159

Publisher: Schiffer Publishing

Haunted Finger Lakes: A Ghost Hunter’s Guide by Dwayne Claud (ISBN 0764333585) is a 159 page book published by Schiffer Books. This book was released by Schiffer Publishing. The book examines the paranormal occurrences reported around the various Finger Lakes including Conesus Lake, Hemlock Lake, Canandaguia Lake, Honeoye Lake/Canadice Lake, Keuka Lake, Seneca Lake, Cayuga Lake, Owasco Lake, Skaneateles Lake, Otisco Lake, Onondaga lake, and Oneida Lake. The book includes a foreward by Michael Keene, the producer of “Visions: Ture Stories of the Supernatural.” There is a brief Introduction where Claud talks about his interests in the paranormal, childhood fears, and what happens when our ideas about what is “normal” are challenged. A chapter covering basic ghost hunting equipment and it use is also included. The chapters that follow cover each lake region along with a brief history and description of each lake and the personal experiences that people have had in the area. The end of the book includes an appendix of paranormal terms, a list of paranormal researchers in the Finger Lakes region, a bibliography, and an index.

The layout of the book is very nicely done: the print is big enough to read so the reader doesn’t endure eye strain, and each place described in the book is accompanied by the physical address of the location and website information. There are a number of black and white photographs that accompany many of the stories so the reader can get a better image of what each haunted destination looks like. Since the photos are in black and white some of the more ghostly images are hard to see, but Dwayne gives additional information to the reader so that they can view the colorized versions of the photos on the Web if he or she desires.

If the reader is seeking a compilation of sometimes disturbing and sometimes inspiring stories about spirits and ghosts, Haunted Finger Lakes: A Ghost Hunter’s Guide by Dwayne Claud is an ideal read. The book is short enough to be read in a single session or the reader can pick up the book and read a couple of stories at a time. Dwayne does a good job of documenting his experiences and the experiences of others so that the reader can get a small taste of what it is like to investigate and experience the paranormal. This book will appeal to the budding paranormal investigator seeking information on investigative methods, the adept paranormal investigator seeking places to check out in the Finger Lakes region, and the paranormal enthusiast who enjoys arm chair ghost investigations. All in all, the reader will be satisfied when reading Haunted Finger Lakes: A Ghost Hunter’s Guide.

Close to 200 Dangerous Headstones Removed from Graveyard

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Nearly 200 headstones in a Christleton-based church in the United Kingdom have been removed, some of them dating back to the eighteenth century, because they were being tested for safety. If they are deemed unsafe they were removed due to instability issues. This was done under the order of Reverend Peter Lee of the St James’ Church. More than 180 stones were removed from the cemetery; the church claims surprise at such a large amount of headstones requiring removal for safety reasons.

Some relatives are rightfully angered and are considering suing the Church. They view the removal of the stones as a clear desecration of memories and many of the bereaved are greatly distressed. It is sad to see this event occurring, because grave stones are really historical monuments that stand as a representation of the individual that once lived. Every headstone is unique in its own right, and has deep significance to those that are still living. Even older headstones have great historical value and there will be much lost due to this move by the church.

What prompted the checking of headstones for stability? Apparently a young boy died in a cemetery after a falling headstone landed on him and killed him. The event has generated paranoia in the community, particularly in stone masons who are testing the headstones for stability issues. It sure would be interesting to conduct a paranormal investigation into the cemetery too; the evps gathered could prove interesting to say the least. It would be interesting to see if this event stirs up paranormal activity.

Chocolate Lovers Less Likely to Have a Stroke

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

In an article on the Telegraph.co.uk, it has revealed that eating chocolate on a regular basis might actually prevent people from having a stroke. Researchers studied close to fifty thousand individuals and discovered that those individuals that ate chocolate were 22 percent less likely to have a stroke than those individuals that do not eat chocolate. What’s more, people that have had a stroke in the past but that began eating chocolate were as much as 46 percent less likely to die.

Chocolate contains flavonoids as well as antioxidants according to the researchers from the University of Toronto who conducted a study. The question remains however, if eating chocolate reduces stroke risks or if healthier people are simply more prone to eating chocolate.

An additional study reveals that eating fifty grams of chocolate weekly can reduce the risk of dying from a stroke as much as 46 percent. Now people have a reason to feel less guilty for consuming that tasty box of chocolates received on Valentine’s Day. Being a serious chocolate lover myself, this is great news for me. While this is not necessarily paranormal news, it certainly is an interesting study.

The key is to consume it in moderation because chocolates are also high in saturated fats and can cause considerable weight gain. Of course, that’s easier said than done! More on the findings of the research linking chocolate consumption to reduced stroke risks is set to be presented at the American Academy of Neurology’s 62nd Annual Meeting hosted in Toronto.

The Italians Find the Movie Paranormal Activity Way Too Frightening

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Right now, the Italian government is giving consideration to placing some restrictions on the movie Paranormal Activity after some of the movie goers had panic attacks. These events have caused consumer groups and childrens’ organizations to cite concerns about the film and its accessibility.

Viewers were tended to by emergency units after placing complaints about having palpitations and anxiety immediately after viewing Paranormal Activity. A fourteen year old was so disturbed that she was in shock and was given oxygen just outside the cinema where she viewed the film. Presently, the movie has no viewer restrictions in Italy; that was kind of silly because it is a horror movie and it really shouldn’t be considered okay for young kids.

Codacons, a consumer group, is now threatening to go to the courts for minors that have been terrified by the movie. According to Ignazio La Russa, the Defense Minister, the movie’s trailer should not be offered on television where young children can see it.

Okay, I get that the movie is probably not ideal for children, but come on folks. I’ve seen the movie. It’s not that scary. It really isn’t. The reaction to Paranormal Activity is blown way out of proportion; I’ve seen movies that were far more disturbing than this one and you don’t see them making headlines and giving people panic attacks. Honestly; if you are an adult and find this kind of stuff that disturbing you shouldn’t be watching “scary” movies in the first place.

Goat Sucker Blamed for Chicken Deaths

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

In an article appearing on the elpasotimes.com, another story about a potential chupacabra attack emerges. Juan Miranda and Cesar Garcia, two men residing in Horizon City, Texas are blaming a chupacabra attack for the death of 30 of their chickens.

Miranda and Garcia have been living in Horizon City since they moved to the location from Chicago three years ago. According to the two men, their rabbits are presently hiding, the cat would not come down off the roof of their home for the entire weekend, their roosters did not crow and their dog did not bark, yet they discovered 20 chickens dead.

Garcia explained that he awoke on Saturday morning to find the 20 chickens had been killed, but that it was especially strange because there was no blood around the inside of the chicken coop. The chickens were all laying dead in a large pile. Garcia reasons that if it were a dog or some other animal that had been responsible for killing the chickens that there would have been a lot more blood and a far bigger mess. Yet, no human is responsible for the attack either, because Garcia photographed some strange tracks by the chicken coop that were clearly not human. The wounds found in each chicken appeared to be two small holes poked through their backs. The tracks were clearly consisting of a heel and paw. The men followed the tracks past their home, over a fence, and four blocks away before the tracks just seemingly disappeared.

On Sunday morning 10 more dead chickens were found dead inside a different chicken coop, and they were all killed in the same fashion. Miranda was surprised that none of the three dogs that they own barked to notify the family of any kind of intruder. According to the director of the Paso Del Norte Paranormal Society, Henry Flores, the paranormal investigative group researched the chupacabra in the northeast El Paso as well as in Chaparral. The team is now thinking of expanding their research to include the Horizon City region.

In the mid 1990s the first reports of the Chupacabra, otherwise called goat sucker, was reported in Puerto Rico. Following the first report, additional reports of chupacabra attacks began cropping up in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, and the United States. The creature is commonly described as either having a reptilian appearance with a greenish colored skin that is scaly, and sometimes it is described as having sharp quills or spines on its back. Sometimes the creature is described as having a panther like face, large fangs, and a forked tongue. Some say that the chupacabra hisses and/or screeches when it has been alarmed and that it also leaves behind a bizarre, sulfuric odor. Meanwhile, other reports describe the chupacabra as appearing to be like a hairless dog with fangs. The creature is believed to feed on a variety of animals and not just goats; it is said that it will feed on birds, chickens, dogs, and horses too, sucking out their blood and sometimes organs too.
